Henry Cavill Joins Woody Allen's New NYC Comedy
Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Casting »
I'd say it was about time that Woody Allen hired some eye candy that wasn't of the female persuasion. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Henry Cavill (The Tudors) has signed to star in the director's upcoming romantic comedy. The as-yet-to-be-titled film also stars Evan Rachel Wood, Larry David, and Allen. There are very few details about the story, but according to early rumors, Rachel Wood is playing Larry David's love interest. Apparently, Allen originally wrote the starring role for himself, but now feels too old to take it on. Thus, he'll appear in a supporting role.
Cavill is probably best known to most as Charles Brandon, the Duke of Suffolk, but he has also earned the reputation as being one of the unluckiest guys in Hollywood. Cavill was in the final stages of auditions for Batman, Superman and James Bond. Of course, we all know he didn't get those parts, but he did score the lead in Joel Schumacher's upcoming sci-fi thriller, Town Creek. Maybe now that the offers are starting to come in, Cavill can get a reputation for being something other than an 'almost was.' Allen's film is currently in production in his old stomping grounds (aka New York City) and is set for release in 2009.
Pope Peter O'Toole

I don't know if Peter O'Toole has just gone wild with acting fever, or the desire to try for another Oscar, but he's really been exploding lately. While he's never really stopped working, he's sped things up monumentally. After Venus, which should have scored him an Oscar, he's been Samuel, the Prophet in One Night with the King, and already completed, filming or about-to-film there are Ratatouille, Stardust, The Christmas Cottage, Love and Virtue, a miniseries called Iron Road and Fenice, LA. It seems like enough to cover the next few years, right? Not quite. He's now heading to television for his first recurring series role, to take on The Tudors -- the show and the family. Variety says that he's been cast as Pope Paul III, and he'll square off against Jonathan Rhys Meyers' Henry VIII. (There's just something about Rhys as the I-am, I-am King that makes me giggle.) The second season's storyline will follow the showdown between the controversial king and the Catholic church, as he tries to divorce Katherine of Aragon (Maria Doyle Kennedy). Showtime's Robert Greenblatt says: "Peter O'Toole is the holy grail for The Tudors. We needed someone of enormous stature to play Pope Paul III... Henry's defiance of the pope and his break with the Roman Catholic Church is one of the great turning points in the history of the world." All because the guy was ticked off about her failure to have little male heirs -- but at least her time with him didn't end in slick beheading. As for O'Toole, I don't think I'll be able to resist seeing his papal presence. How about you?
