Superman Sequel Canned: Brandon Routh to Star in Justice League Flick Instead?
Filed under: Action, Warner Brothers, RumorMonger, Fandom, 20th Century Fox, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Before you get all up in arms and start crying things out like, "But Singer already said he's filming a Superman sequel in 2008!" -- keep in mind, this is Hollywood ... and things change. Think of it as if your parents were planning a big summer trip to Disney World, but at the last minute decided to go to Phoenix instead ... because your grandmother is itching to see you. It happens all the time round these parts, and whether you want to admit it or not, word is some major Superman announcements might be heading our way. According to Moviehole (who have some pretty good inside studio sources), the highly-anticipated Superman Returns sequel (currently titled The Man of Steel) might be placed into turnaround so that Brandon Routh (and the Superman character) can be used in the upcoming Justice League flick instead.
Right now, it's just a rumor ... but it's one that kind of makes sense. In order to stage a decent Justice League movie, either Superman or Batman (or both) would have to appear. Since Nolan is already hard at work on The Dark Knight (sequel to Batman Begins), Warner Bros. probably won't mess with that franchise -- in fact, Moviehole claims the caped crusader won't be involved in this Justice League thing; they say, "he's too big to waste on a film like this." But seeing as the Superman sequel was always up for debate since the first one didn't take in the kind of money the studio was hoping for, the smarter move might be to throw Supes in Justice League first -- drum up more interest in the character -- and then come out with a sequel to Superman Returns.
The move is similar to the one Fox is pulling right now; how they've decided to pair up The Silver Surfer with The Fantastic Four. If it works out for them, not only will The Fantastic Four turn into a more profitable franchise, but The Silver Surfer will most likely surf off into a solo effort. What do you think? Would you rather see Superman in a Justice League movie or in a sequel to Superman Returns? Chances are, you will not get to have your Routh and eat it too.

"pair up?" what? Are you trying to insinuate that Silver Surfer wouldn't be part of the Fantastic Four Universe without Hollywood's Intervention?
Please, get your stories straight... This is the Silver Surfer we are talking about ... Most Comic geeks list him among the FF Pantheon, he was a Jack Kirby special!
If you want to complain about Hollywood forcing Superheroes together or "creating" Villans to fit in the established universes then take a look a HarleyQuinn in the Batman Universe. What started as a character in the Animated series has now bullied it's way into the Batman Universe also ...
ugly ...

The Justice League IS the big 3. You cannot do a JLA movie without Bat, Supes and Wonder Woman...

Nah I think it would be great. Batman was always kind of in and out of the JLA. they could easily make references to him being out and or away. or if it is a creation story have him in the wings as a possible new member, and its an easy way to introduce some more obscure characters. maybe they can get the guy from entourage to play Aquaman ;)

i hate to say it but singer let me down with supes return. i guess it had to happen sometimes. i'm all about a jla movie!!!! i think moviegoers are ready for a major teamup. ironically thanks to bryan singer(Xmen 1&2). the reason "returns" had issues was that singer geeked out too much and left it tooo long!!! i'm not one of those people who gets bored easily, but that bohemoth could have stood to lose half an hour of footage. I can understand why the aren't going to use Bats for the movie. as long as they put in Green Arrow as the voice of dissent and either The Question or Elongated Man as the detectives they might just make up for the loss of Bats. i'm realistic enought to know that arrow is the only likely one of those three to make it though. this makes me think that all of the new characters added recently to Smallville might have been Warner testing to see if audiences would respond to them. especially since four of them were jla characters (Green Arrow, The Flash, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter)

I guess this would solve their Wonder Woman problem as well since that movie seems to be dead with Whedon off the job.
Also, why can't they still have Batman in the movie? With Superman I can understand having the same actor but with Batman all you need is a guy using the same suit and doing the deep voice.

i feel like this could be the movie that ends the whole superhero film streak we've had the past few years. it'll be overdone and not done well.
give me the Superman sequel and the Batman sequel and can this idea now.

Unless they borrow the plot line from the Justice League animated series pilot, I think they need to have a Green Lantern and a Wonder Woman movie released before they can think about a Justice League movie. That way, they don't need to spend screen time establishing those characters. I don't really care either way which comes first in regards to JLA or The Man of Steel, as long as all of the founding members are on board...except for maybe Aquaman. Unless of course the plot involves some sea crisis, then they've got a reason to introduce the character.

Superman Returns production cost was over $200,000,000 and Singer got a lot of crap for that. to do a great Justice League movie, including Superman and 3-5 other huge super heroes, i'd think you'd even more than that.
and i completely agree with Darien... no Batman = a lot of upset fans.

I have to say that this is probably the only Superman idea I've heard in years to give me any hope at all. For more reasons than I feel it would be polite to state in this post, I hated Superman Returns. I thought it was a terrible story idea, terribly casted, and a waste of those free movie passes my brother and I used to see it. Brandon Routh is a nice enough guy but he was chosen to be one of America's most iconic figures and he just wasn't ready for it. Consider how little time Clark or Superman spent talking instead of just staring someone down or looking at them with wide open doe eyes. Look at how much CG it took to make him look 1/10 as impressive as Christopher Reeve did. So now in a post 300 world where maybe someone can get Supes body type correct, football player not baseball player, we might get a good flick outta this. Wonder Woman's casting is most essential and please dear God in heaven, I know it's blasphemy to seperate the Big 3, but keep Bruce out of this. Batman is going so well that the only thing that could harm its heat is being in a bad JL movie. Ollie, Green Arrow, can handle any of the money concerns that the storyline would raise so Batman could make a cameo toward the end or something and I'd begrudgingly accept that. After casting WW, and figuring out how to keep Batman out of the story the last concern is villan(s). If I hear the words Cheetah, Bizarro or Solomon Grundy I'm going to be pissed. If they say Slade, Dr. Light (only to set up a possible Identity Crisis movie), Metallo, Brainiac or Darkseid (who should be the front runner, consider the Furies, Boom Tubes, Hellspores, Eye Beams that render things to ash) it has a shot. It give Brandon an opportunity to be just Superman for a while, so maybe he'll get that part down and he'll just have to worry about being Clark later. So this is possible good news if they get the right story, the right wonder woman, leave batman out of it and make the villains Darkseid w/ Granny Goodness and the Furies.

I think intro-ing those new characters could be tough without their own movies. Unless Warner takes some creative initiative, and from a studio I doubt they have the guts or wearwithall. I'll share the idea that's simple enough to work, so simple people will think it's stupid or dated. Warner Bros. should release in front of some of it's other movies where they will fit or maybe as a treat to make better a bunch of crappy movies; a series of serials featuring the JLA. That way exposition time will be reasonably cut from the screenplay. I also believe that bringing Motion Picture serials back would help cut down on the ripped off feeling that accompanies a $10 + movie ticket. Serials are basically commercials, kids will get into them, parents will catch one or two in front of Ocean's 14 or whatever and just make the ones for the more unknown JLA members the better ones. We don't need the Flash to have a 15 minute story, his can be for kids and 3 minutes long. Something they can play on CN. Aquaman should be played by the guy from Entourage, and he should be written out of the story; just make serials featuring the guy and it'll create buzz because they'll also use them on the show. If they get started they could get these ready for when The Dark Knight comes out and really strike a chord. I'm not looking for an extended trailer either I mean take some writers and do some actual work and maybe this thing won't be so bad..... Okay the comic book and movie geeks in me have said all they have to say for right now.

A Justice League movie is just plain STUPID. Period. Leave the characters to their own individual movie franchises and do something different: like a Justice Society movie. Showcase the lesser-known figures of the JSA instead and avoid the headaches of overlap, inconsistencies and contradictions that a JLA movie will inevitably create.

I wouldn't put to much stock in the Justice League stuff unless the "sources" or main players ID themselves. Here's something that I WOULD place faith in:
Superman Sequel Eyeing March '08 Start
Source: BlueTights.net March 19, 2007
Robert Meyer Burnett, who produced and directed behind-the-scenes material for Superman Returns, says that March, 2008 is the planned start of principal photography for the sequel. A Q&A on BlueTights.net reads:
Angeloz asks if I'm coming back to work on the sequel. The answer is...I'm ALREADY working on the sequel. Bryan, Brandon and the whole merry bunch will be coming back...and filming will probably begin March, 2008, as was always planned from the beginning. The WWII film Bryan plans to shoot over the summer will have NO EFFECT whatsoever on the Superman sequel schedule.
There you have it from soemone in the know......

I think all the Justice League talk is BS. Here's someone who's in the know other than a "source," from 34 minutes ago.
Superman Returns 2 to Start Filming in 2008
Source: BlueTights.net
Monday, March 19th, 2007
Robert Meyer Burnett, videographer on Superman Returns and director of the behind-the-scenes documentary Requiem for Krypton: Making 'Superman Returns' wrote briefly, in a BlueTights.net Q&A session, about when the sequel will begin filming:
Angeloz asks if I'm coming back to work on the sequel. The answer is...I'm ALREADY working on the sequel. Bryan, Brandon and the whole merry bunch will be coming back...and filming will probably begin March, 2008, as was always planned from the beginning. JLA would be a great movie. And most people know Wonder Woman and the Flash from there TV shows in the past. Toss in Green Lantern, Green Arrow and Supies and you'll have the perfect movie. Even the Green Arrow from Smallville would work perfectly. Long live the JLA

There are two things that really hurt me in the idea of a JL Movie. One I would really like for "Man of Steel" Movie to come out first. In that story line have a connection where he will need more help maybe to save the world, or fight an evil Villian. So at the end of Man of Steel, hint away that Batman and WW will part of the Next sequel. In Batman "the Dark Knight" do the same thing... Some how someway progress the Story where Bruce will need some help and containing the he needs to save the world also.
Wonder Woman does NOT need her own movie.. I think it will be a waste of a Movie, and No one will really care much for it... Intro WW in the JL movie. Where Batman and Superman Meet for the first time and Plan things out, knowing that they will need more help. Similar to George Clooney and Brad Pitt in the Ocean's 11. Gathering the Crew. They should Get Wonder Women, Flash, Aquaman. With those Five on the Silver Screen, we are talking competition to TITANIC.....

Ugh. Forget the JLA movie. Anybody heard of '300' and Frank Miller, Zach Snyder? After DC does The Watchmen, put Miller and Snyder on the REAL "Dark Knight Returns'. Graphic novel come to life - in the future so no need for Routh and Bale. Get Bruce Willis for Bats and Patrick Warburton for the undercover boyscout in blue. Film it shot for shot from the novel just like '300'. Make it at least PG-13 if not R, throw in plenty of mutant battles, keep to the great story and do the best graphic novel of all time justice.
Then, just sit back and count the money.
